Early Life & Education

Thasunda Brown Duckett was born on July 22, 1973, in Rochester, New York. Her family later moved to Texas, where she spent much of her formative years. Growing up, Duckett witnessed firsthand the economic challenges facing many American families, experiences that instilled in her a deep commitment to financial inclusion and economic empowerment that would become central themes of her career.

Duckett attended the University of Houston, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Marketing. The University of Houston's C.T. Bauer College of Business provided her with a strong foundation in financial services and consumer business. She later pursued her Master of Business Administration at Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business, further developing her expertise in business strategy and leadership.

TIAA manages approximately $1.3 trillion in assets and serves more than five million participants across thousands of institutions.

Duckett's appointment was historic: she became only the fourth Black woman ever to serve as CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
