About
Early Life & Education
Patrick Collison was born on September 9, 1988, in Limerick, Ireland, and grew up in the small village of Dromineer in County Tipperary. His parents, Denis and Lily Collison, ran a hotel in the village, and Patrick grew up in a household that valued both hard work and intellectual curiosity. From a young age, he displayed an extraordinary aptitude for mathematics, science, and programming that set him apart from his peers.
Collison's early academic achievements were remarkable. At the age of 16, he won the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, Ireland's most prestigious science competition for secondary school students, for creating Croma, a new programming language for the Lisp dialect. This achievement brought him national attention in Ireland and signaled the depth of his technical abilities. He also won a silver medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad, placing among the top young mathematicians in the world.
After completing his secondary education, Collison was accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the world's premier science and engineering universities. He enrolled at MIT in 2006 but would ultimately leave before completing his degree to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities full-time. His time at MIT exposed him to the vibrant technology and startup culture of Cambridge and Boston, and it was during this period that the seeds of his most significant venture were planted.
Career Journey
Patrick Collison's entrepreneurial career began remarkably early. While still a teenager, he demonstrated the ability to build and sell technology companies, a skill set that would accelerate dramatically with the founding of Stripe.
- Creator of Croma Programming Language (2005) — At age 16, developed a programming language that won Ireland's Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition
- Co-Founder, Auctomatic (2007–2008) — Co-founded an auction management and analytics company at age 19 with his brother John. The company was acquired by Live Current Media in March 2008 for approximately $5 million in cash
- Co-Founder & CEO, Stripe (2010–Present) — Co-founded Stripe with his brother John Collison in 2010. Built the company into the world's most valuable private fintech company, processing hundreds of billions of dollars in payments annually for millions of businesses worldwide
Building Stripe
The founding of Stripe grew out of Patrick and John Collison's frustration with the difficulty of accepting payments online. In 2010, setting up online payment processing required navigating a complex web of banks, payment processors, and regulatory requirements. The process typically took weeks or months and required significant technical expertise. The Collison brothers believed that accepting payments online should be as simple as adding a few lines of code to a website.
Working from their apartment, Patrick and John built the first version of Stripe — initially called /dev/payments — and launched it in September 2011. The product allowed developers to integrate payment processing into their websites or applications with just seven lines of code. This simplicity was revolutionary, and Stripe quickly gained traction among developers and startups in Silicon Valley.
Stripe's early investors included Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, and Sequoia Capital, who recognized the enormous potential of simplifying online payments. The company grew rapidly, expanding from simple payment processing into a comprehensive suite of financial infrastructure tools, including billing, invoicing, fraud prevention, issuing, treasury management, and corporate card services.
Under Patrick Collison's leadership as CEO, Stripe has grown into one of the most valuable private companies in the world. By 2025, Stripe was valued at approximately $91.5 billion and was processing hundreds of billions of dollars in payment volume annually. The company's customers range from small startups to some of the world's largest companies, including Amazon, Google, Shopify, BMW, and many others. Stripe operates in more than 40 countries and supports 135 currencies, making it one of the most broadly available payment platforms in the world.
Stripe's impact on the internet economy has been profound. By making it dramatically easier for businesses to accept payments online, Stripe has enabled millions of new businesses to participate in the digital economy. The company estimates that it powers a significant percentage of all online commerce, and its infrastructure has become so fundamental that it is often described as part of the economic operating system of the internet.

Leadership Philosophy
Patrick Collison's leadership philosophy is characterized by long-term thinking, intellectual rigor, and a deep commitment to building infrastructure that increases the GDP of the internet. He has spoken frequently about his belief that the most important companies are those that serve as platforms for other businesses, enabling a broader ecosystem of innovation and economic activity.
Collison is known for his voracious reading habits and wide-ranging intellectual interests, which span economics, science, history, and philosophy. He maintains a public list of books he has read, and his thinking about Stripe's strategy is informed by his study of economic history and the role of infrastructure in enabling economic growth. He has cited historical parallels such as the development of the railroad system and the creation of standardized shipping containers as analogies for the kind of economic infrastructure Stripe aims to provide.
As a leader, Collison emphasizes the importance of hiring exceptional people and creating an environment where they can do their best work. Stripe is known for its rigorous hiring process and its culture of intellectual curiosity. Collison has maintained a relatively flat organizational structure and has been deliberate about preserving the startup-like culture of innovation and speed even as Stripe has grown to thousands of employees.
Science & Philanthropy
Beyond Stripe, Patrick Collison has made significant contributions to scientific research and philanthropy. In 2020, he co-founded Fast Grants with Tyler Cowen to provide rapid funding for COVID-19 research. Fast Grants distributed tens of millions of dollars to scientists within 48 hours of application, dramatically accelerating the pace of pandemic research at a time when traditional funding mechanisms were too slow to respond to the crisis.
In 2021, Collison co-founded the Arc Institute, a non-profit biomedical research organization based in Palo Alto, California. Arc is designed to reimagine how biomedical research is conducted, providing researchers with long-term funding and the freedom to pursue ambitious projects without the constraints of traditional academic grant cycles. The institute focuses on understanding the biology of complex diseases and developing new therapeutic approaches.
Collison has also launched Stripe Climate, a product that allows Stripe merchants to automatically direct a fraction of their revenue to carbon removal technologies. This initiative has channeled millions of dollars to frontier carbon removal companies and has helped create a market for technologies that pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
