About
Early Life & Education
Melanie Perkins was born in 1987 in Perth, Western Australia, a city known for its relative geographic isolation but vibrant entrepreneurial community. Her mother was a teacher and her father was a Malaysian-born engineer, a multicultural background that gave Perkins a broad perspective on the world from an early age. Growing up in Perth, she attended Sacred Heart College and developed an early interest in both creativity and technology.
Perkins enrolled at the University of Western Australia, where she studied communications, psychology, and commerce. It was during her university years that she had the insight that would eventually lead to Canva. While tutoring other students in graphic design software, she was struck by how difficult and inaccessible professional design tools were for ordinary people. Programs like Adobe Photoshop and InDesign required extensive training and were prohibitively expensive for students and small businesses. Perkins began to envision a world where anyone could create beautiful designs without professional training or expensive software.
This insight led Perkins and her partner, Cliff Obrecht, to co-found Fusion Books in 2007, while still in university. Fusion Books was an online platform that allowed high school students to collaboratively design their school yearbooks using simple drag-and-drop tools. The company grew to become the largest yearbook publisher in Australia, validating Perkins' belief that there was enormous demand for accessible design tools.
Career Journey
Melanie Perkins' career has been defined by a single, ambitious vision: to democratize design and make it accessible to everyone. Her journey from a university student in Perth to the CEO of one of the world's most valuable private technology companies is a testament to persistence, vision, and the power of solving a universal problem.
- Co-Founder, Fusion Books (2007–2012) — Co-founded an online yearbook design platform while still at university. Grew it to become Australia's largest yearbook publisher, serving hundreds of schools across Australia and internationally
- Co-Founder & CEO, Canva (2013–Present) — Co-founded Canva with Cliff Obrecht and Cameron Adams in January 2013 in Sydney, Australia. Built the company into a global design platform with over 200 million monthly active users, used in more than 190 countries, with over $3 billion in annualized revenue
Building Canva
The journey to founding Canva was not straightforward. After the success of Fusion Books, Perkins spent several years pitching her broader vision for an online design platform to investors in Silicon Valley. She made her first trip to San Francisco in 2010 and faced years of rejection before securing her first major investment. The path to funding required over 100 investor meetings and multiple pivots in her pitch before she found backers who shared her vision.
Canva was officially founded in January 2013, with Perkins as CEO, Cliff Obrecht as COO, and Cameron Adams, a former Google designer, as CPO. The company launched its platform later that year, offering a free, browser-based design tool that allowed anyone to create professional-quality graphics, presentations, social media posts, and other visual content using simple drag-and-drop functionality and a vast library of templates.
The timing proved perfect. The rise of social media had created an enormous demand for visual content, and small businesses, marketers, educators, and individuals all needed design tools that were more accessible than professional software like Adobe Creative Suite. Canva filled this gap perfectly, offering a freemium model with a generous free tier and premium features available through subscription plans.
Canva's growth has been extraordinary. The platform surpassed 200 million monthly active users across more than 190 countries, making it one of the most widely used software applications in the world. The company generates over $3 billion in annualized revenue and has been valued at more than $40 billion, making it the most valuable startup ever founded by a woman. Canva has expanded well beyond its original scope, now offering tools for video editing, website building, document creation, whiteboarding, and enterprise design management.
A key differentiator for Canva has been its commitment to remaining accessible. While many software companies start with low prices and raise them as they gain market power, Canva has maintained a generous free tier that allows millions of users to create designs without paying anything. This approach has driven massive adoption and created a powerful network effect, as users share Canva-created designs and introduce others to the platform.
